Puerto de la Cruz General Description

Puerto de la Cruz (Port of the Cross) built in the 1600's originally called Puerto de la Orotava, is the largest resort in Tenerife and situated in the North of the Island. It is also the oldest tourist resort in the Canary Islands, being popular from the 19th century. The mild climate, marvelous scenic views, especially the volcanic Mount Teide, and the warmth and friendliness of the locals being the main attractions to visitors.

Originally the town thrived as a port, possibly help by the blocking of the harbour at Garachico by an eruption. It was also handy for the nearby city of La Orotava for exporting wine.

There are still old buildings around, look for the carved balconies. The church of Nuestra Senora de la Pena de Francia is from the 17th century.

There are many large quality hotels and a wide selection of restaurants. Enjoy the natural swimming pools, the massive artificial lake, and the botanical gardens.

Puerto de la Cruz again has a flourishing selection of bars discos and restaurants and you may be tempted to try your luck at the tables in one of the 2 Casinos.

Bars & Nightlife in Puerto de la Cruz

Because Puerto de la Cruz nightlife has a larger proportion of locals & spanish holiday goers in it's mix nightlife tends start later than in the southern resorts of Tenerife.

Although you will find bars & restaurants throughout the resort, the main areas fot nightlife are:

  • Plaza Charco square, a very popular meeting point with lots of resorts and a selection of bars.
  • Avenida de Colon & the Ranila district, also known as the Restaurant district.
  • Avenida Generalísimo. for nightclubs

Ranila district also known as the Restaurant district.

This was the area where the fishermen & dock workers lived and consisted of small houses. The area was Puerto de la Cruz's poor area. When the port trade dwindled the area became poorer and seriously run down.

With the of mass tourism the area has been revitalised and renovated, with many small family run restaurants opening along with cafe bars.

When visiting this area keep your eye out for rather stunning wall art that has been painted onto the end of some of the buildings.

Ranila district Location

The Ranila district runs from Plaza Charco westwards to around El Penon next to the football ground & Castillo San Felipe And between from Calle Puerto Viejo and the sea front
